I got a couple emails and comments asking some different questions about the granny squares. I thought I would give you some of the info in a blog post!
First off, I am using the Summer Garden Granny Square pattern from Attic24. I have been tweaking it a little by doing five rounds (not including the border) to make the squares bigger. I join my new yarn a lot differently than her as well. I also chain 3 in the corners instead of 2. The only difference in her granny squares compared to the regular pattern is she makes bobbles for the first round. I just like the way that looks and makes it look a little unique.
To learn to join as you go, there are tons of tutorials on the internet on how to do it. I just Googled it and chose the one that made sense to me. The one I am using is here. Oh and Lucy on Attic24 has one as well. I haven’t looked at it but I’m sure it’s good.
Someone also asked about those lovely (kidding of course) ends that you have to weave in. What’s the best way to weave them in? I have a feeling I am not the only one that is not a fan of weaving in all the lose yarn. Unfortunately with granny squares there are a lot if you are changing colors each round.
The one thing I do to make it a lot easier is while I’m crocheting a new round, I bring the lose ends up and work my stitches around them as I go. So I’m basically weaving them in as I crochet. This is a huge time saver! Yet, there are always plenty others to weave in. For those ones, I personally make sure to weave one way, then turn and bring the yarn back a different way. This will be like a zig zag movement. That has been the most secure way that I have tried.

In other news, I am working on a new Tunisian Crochet tutorial! This one is called The Bias Stitch. It is very similar to the crossed stitch but has a different look.

those grannies lay so nice and flat, what stitch do you use to connect yours? I love the tunisian stitch..

ReplyDeleteI tried to follow the link for join as you go for connecting grannies, but it was "closed". I have also been googling it and have been very frustrated with the couple dozen sites with ... so called tutorials. I have been crocheting for many many years and would appreciate a new technique. If you could post directions that would be excellent.
