Over 4th of July weekend, I took my daughter to Michael’s and got her her own crochet stuff. I let her pick two colors of yarn and we got a nice (nicer than mine!) crochet hook that she can use for a long time.
I then sat down with her and taught her how to chain. She really got the hang of it after awhile! She started making a bunch of chain bracelets, which is a great project for her because she gave them to all of her friends and family.
Here is the one she made me! We also got matching elephant bracelets for a $1 and we wear them everyday.
We will soon try to start the single crochet and go from there. If anyone has any tips on teaching kiddos learn to crochet, let me know! I’m excited to have another future crochet nerd in the house. She is already getting excited about yarn like me.
How wonderful! I know she'll have a lot of fun. She's off to a great start!
ReplyDeleteHow nice! I wish my daughter was also into crochetting... At the age of 10 she rather asks me to make something than to learn it herself... Maybe someday she will have the motivation.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to her creations!
It looks like you're already on the right track! I teach kids to crochet every week at my daughter's elementary school (we love our yarn club!), and as long as the kid is enthusiastic, he or she will be successful. I have read tips like "use thick yarn and large hooks when teaching children to crochet", but I have found worsted weight yarn and H or I hooks to be a better fit. The thick yarn trick works better with kids learning to knit.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great start!! Lovely bracelets!:)
ReplyDeleteYour daughter looks so enthusiastic to get going! It is amazing how quickly kids can pick up crochet. I blogged http://mykeeponkeepingon.blogspot.com/2015/05/crochet-school-at-grandmas-house.html about teaching 2 of my grandchildren to crochet. And this fall I plan to follow up with more lessons.
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to keep everyone posted on her progress!
This is wonderful that she is learning the fine art of crochet! I hope she picks it up quickly and I hope she loves it! :)
ReplyDeleteThat chain bracelet is the best! How sweet.

Lots of tips: I let my girl chain and chain until she asked for the next step. Then she was ready, may have been a month or so. She made hair braids, barbie belts, doll scarves etc. and then she wanted more. I showed her single crochet and she made a barbie beach towel or was it a picnic rug? i don't know but if it had a little purpose that helped. She is 8 now and has been doing it for a year. She can do a granny square, single crochet and this week she learnt to crochet in a round. I highly recommend a book called Kids learn to crochet bu Lucinda Guy. My girl uses that on her own with great instructions and kiddie projects. Jo x

Hello! I am Irene. I love crocheting and i have a blog too! i like your blog, also this post is so cute! Nice to meet you! i hope you will visit mine,too!g+1 for your post! See you!!!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! My mom taught me how to crochet when I was a kid. Well, 10 or so. The biggest tip I have for you is let her figure out how to do things on her own. My mom tried to fight me about how to hold my yarn and whatnot and it didn't make for such a pleasant experience. Now, it's pretty funny! But at the time it was pretty discouraging. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's brilliant. I'm sure you'll both enjoy her learning to crochet. I was young when I learnt to crochet - even younger when I learnt to knit - and my mother and I loved making things and discussing patterns and yarn.
ReplyDeleteSo wonderful! I can't wait to teach my little one some knitting and crochet like my mum did with me - even after completing school, college and university i can say knitting and sewing are still the best things i ever learnt!xxxx
ReplyDelete(i second the comments about standing back a bit too - my mum is a little bit controlling, and i am a left handed crocheter and she is right handed so it did get a bit tense at times! haha! i think with a lot of things, these things just need to 'click' just lots of encouragement and being on hand to demonstrate and answer questions! can't wait to follow this little journey of discovery!)
