Just some thoughts…

Hi friends! Well hi to anyone who is still around and reading this pathetic little empty blog. I just wanted to pop in with some thoughts.

As you know, I have an Etsy shop. I usually get most of my business between October to February mostly because I sell winter type things. During this time every year it becomes a little overwhelming. My shop has been a huge blessing. The income is all extra and we use it usually to help with Christmas gifts and other little things.

I have learned after this past season that I am not enjoying it like I used to. The stress to add to the already busy holiday time, the customer service, making the same things over and over, two unhappy customers, one lost package, it all just kind of drained me. Orders became more of this lingering uneasy feeling like I have to be doing those over other things going on. I just didn’t like the feeling.

I also needed to sit back and see why I was doing the shop. I loved the customers, the connections, and the business but I also think it brought on a little greed. I was competitive with myself, wanting to make more than I did the year before. Yes it was a goal thing too but it was also greed. I even caught myself being envious of other shops like mine. I think in the end that was the only reason I was doing the shop was for the money. I thought I was helping our family, which I was, but I needed to be more present with them instead of the money.

So right now the shop is closed… and it may be for a long time. I am not sure if I want to open it up again for the next holiday season. I just want to see what it would be like to not have that added stress and try to enjoy the holidays even more. It just goes by so fast!

I also really want to get back into blogging. I really miss it. I have so many things I would love to share and I just don’t take the time. I hope to share many more tutorials, fun projects, recipes, and other stuff with you guys. I also want to completely redo my whole look on the blog. The flowers are getting a little old for me. So I will be brain storming a little to see what I want to do.

I hope to also take this time to enjoy some fun projects I have wanted to do and also finish some that have been around forever. Um, like maybe my daughter’s granny square blanket. She asks about that a lot and I want to be able to finish that for her.

So in the end, I have decided to take a break from Etsy and focus on the fun projects and blogging. I am excited to get back into my blogging groove and to get to know you awesome readers more. I am amazed and so thankful for all of your comments and emails I still continue to get even if I don’t blog. Thank you!

I have one order left then I am DONE! Expect a tutorial to be posted in the future for something called the Linked Stitch. It’s an awesome stitch that is very sturdy and easy to do.

Alright I’m done rambling… Thanks again for sticking around!

Oh and I can never post something without pictures. I just can’t. So here are a couple random pictures for you.

My gorgeous friend Katie showing off her hat I made her.

A gal ordered all three of these hats and I love the colors! I may need to make myself one in each of those colors as well. Smile

Knitting away into the late night… Typical night for me during the busy season

I was only three stiches away from being done with this scarf and I ran out of yarn! Not cool

That’s all for now.

  1. YES! I've been wondering about opening an Etsy shop lately (really, my friends and family try to convince me) but, I haven't been sure about it. As much as I love taking orders from friends and family, I'm not sure I'm ready to open things up to THE PUBLIC. You know? And I can definitely see myself getting carried away with it. So, thank you for this post. It's quite timely.

And I absolutely HATE when I run out of yarn that close to finishing! It's happened more than once.

  3. Welcome back. Sometimes it is good to step back and evaluate. I've always admired the people who can make an inventory of items to sell. I don't have that kind of drive to produce the same item to the same level of quality that is required for something like that. I'm constantly moving to new things.

I wish you well as you decide where to go next.

  6. I know it is stressful that's the reason after leaving full time job to enjoy my hobbies, I decided not to start the business even if I was so tempted to. It becomes a compulsion. But if you don't mind, I have a suggestion. Instead of closing down completely, you can create and sell patterns which won't be that stressful as crocheting the products.

  8. I completely understand where you're coming from. My family and friends have often encouraged me to set up an etsy shop and sell my various creations but when I consider it seriously I always say no. I love to create things and I love to give gifts but the thought of having to produce on demand has always felt like it could be quite stressful to me.

Enjoy your family. I'm here to tell you the years pass way too quickly. Ask me how I know!

  9. A lovely honest post. I hope you will feel God's presence with you in this decision and be given grace and wisdom in your future decisions. Finances and family time can take a bit of juggling! I am unable to contribute to our family by working as I am disabled but I try to make as many presents as I can to help out with costs. Xx

  10. I know what you mean about Etsy taking over your life. I have there and done that. I now crochet for charity and at the pace that I can enjoy it. I too also have a blanket to finish for my youngest son and it will get done soon. Your family is much more important then the money. Time flies way too quickly. Take Care,

  13. I completely understand. My sister and I had an ETSY shop and we closed it because it became just to much. We were creating just for the shop and not for ourselves.
    Hug and love the hats,

  14. So many of my friends tell me to sell my knitted and crochet'd things but they don't realise how much effort goes into it.

I really admire the work you've put in so far and it's totally ok to close down for a while or forever if it's the right thing for you :-)

  16. Mary, I stumbled across your blog the other day. I was searching for a simple tutorial on how to crochet Tunisian Simple Stitch. Your tutorial was excellent! Thank you! I'm a Christian too. I live in NJ. Do you have a tutorial on how to make a scarf using the Tunisian crochet? If so, please let me know. My email address is: mysterymom.83@gmail.com

    Be blessed!

  18. I really admire your reslove in letting go of your shop for a while. I have also been trying to blog and recently started a crochet blog of my own :) I love that you do not just include posts that are strictly crochet, but still manage to keep it all very creative. If you are interested I would love for you to read my blog. Thanks.
